We propose not to replace the volume of the Palazzetto delle Scienze but to complete the rear base by integrating the canteen. Consequently, the program of the Middle School and gymnasiums is concentrated in a single compact volume and basement located between the Cantonal Library and the current building of the gymnasium – canteen by the architect Cino Chiesa. The new school building is set back on the edge of the site to give maximum breathing space to its neighbors. The facade of the cantonal library’s book depository, beautifully illuminated at night, thus remains open and visible. The designed volume establishes a new urban equilibrium, a center of the sector that clarifies the hierarchies of the open spaces. The current gymnasium, due to its position within the sector and its spatial quality, lends itself to being transformed into a great hall. The project is part of respecting the strong historical memory of the place, developing new connections with the lake and the river, creating new spaces for socializing and preserving and enhancing the pre-existing elements.
